Incredible India Midterms Review...NOT!

India Gate
Back to law school, that is.  I badly wanted to do a bit of midterms review in India but when my friend saw the books and codals I bought with me, she just looked at me, rolled  her eyes and said  "Do you really think you can read while here?"

Seriously, I planned to do a bit of reading especially at night when all is calm and quite from the day's itinerary. Wrong!  The cold North India winter was harsh and I barely survived it.  For one, I didn't bring enough winter clothes because my codals and books took up considerable space.  Finally, I know I can be cold-blooded and can be an ice queen emotion-wise but I am not built for cold weather.  A 16C aircon temp will drive me out of the room already!

While roaming in India, my hands would freeze and become numb as soon as I venture outside (even with gloves on). The numbness would then slowly creep up to the upper arms and I'd often be left shivering within an hour outside.

India is indeed incredible but my nights would often mean huddling under layers of blankets to keep myself warm and I would often forgo dinner. So my plan to study for midterms actually flew out the window.  My bed gave me little comfort.  It was not fun but I am still thankful for those few days that the sun would take a peek to warm up my frozen knuckles.

Honestly, my codals weren't much of any use there except to make my luggage heavier.  I was only able to read for hours during my long wait at the airports in Kolkata and Kuala Lumpur.  At least, the will was there, but darn cold and the incredible sights in India were too much for me to resist.

I Got Myself a Drill Sergeant aka Study Coach

Whaaaat?!

I already imagine seeing a lot of brows raised.  People hire life coaches, so why not a law study coach? I study on my own but when you are on-leave, it is a totally different story.

I cannot study unsupervised when I'm out of school so in order to make each moment count, I enlisted the help of a dear 'friend-turned-study coach'. I hate that it sounds friggin' geeky but not anymore when the reward is a trip to the next World Cup, yey! I know that's four, long years away but I'll take any deal just to go somewhere, for FREE!

Mind you, no exchange of money for this. One thing I learn in law school is to negotiate at all times! I did a barter to give my friend a kick in his bum so he'll keep on track for his review for medical license.

The Rules

As part of our rules, I have to 'report' by posting seriously 'study' photos of what I'm doing for a given day (check out left sidebar). Think of this person as my personal Drill Sergeant who will make me do the impossible. Not only that, I have a timeline of what I'm supposed to cover for a 2-week period. It isn't foolproof I know but who am I kidding? Not myself, so I better get serious.

I have to admit, it is difficult but doable. I have a million things to do everyday that I often slump asleep in my working chair. Having a study coach will push me to move from point A to B, by force. As much as I like the idea of reading leisurely, being whipped and forced to do it will give greater results.

Let's see how this pans out but honestly, I'm stoked. To productivity! Ciao!

The 'Law School' Anthem

Law students, if you still haven't got a hold of this video, I'm warning you in advance, it will steal some minutes off your already precious time and leave you humming it inside your head. Law School is a parody of Maroon 5's Payphone which went viral a few months ago after bagging the top spot in video contest sponsored by Abovethelaw.coma US-based legal blog. The said site invited law students to send in their comedy videos and the rest is history.

The video is hilarious (but oh so true) with lines like,
"I'm spending my nights up making highlights,
 now read me my rights."

Check 2:16, it's epic, I know many fellow students can relate. Here it goes, watch it, sing it, dance it and enjoy! (I am thinking of doing my own version of this already.)
Ciao!

Do you really, really, want to be a Lawyer?

Are you really sure?

"Are you sure? Are you really, really sure? Are you truly, super, really, really sure?"

I overheard from TV from a Spongebob Squarepants episode. Yes, that Spongebob and no, I was not watching it that time because I was reading my law books (me, defensive). But, yeah I have a love and hate relationship with that sponge guy. How in the world can a sponge be so famous?

Going back to that conversation between Spongebob and another character, I overheard not too long ago, nobody really asked me if I really, really, super wanted to be a lawyer.  For some reasons, this photo instantly caused that Spongebob deja vu moment out of my 'close to overload level' memory bank, just like that.

Music and Law

"Thank you for the music"

Music is like the air I breathe. When I read law books, music adds reading pleasure with it playing softly in the background.  I believe I understand better that way. It is like water. A human can survive 10 days without food, 3 days without water but for me, a day without music feels like eternity.

I can read and work as long as music is present. It is an adrenalin-drawing factor that pumps me up so I'd have the energy to clean out the mess in my work space.  I can survive a life without television but not without music. In fact I play YouTube music right on my television just to get my fix.  Each chance, I drown myself with the best mixes I can find.

Music is like salt and lemon to my tequila. It is like ganache to my favorite triple trouble chocolate cake. I can do whatever needs to be done as long as there is music.  For me, my existence is missing one link without it.

When I hop into my ‘truck’ it is music I play that accompanies me all throughout. It keeps me happy when I get stuck in traffic. It keeps me alive when I drove 15 hours to the tip of southern Luzon.

When it comes to the kind of music I listen to it’s as varied as the colors of the rainbow coming from the extreme ends of the musical spectrum. I dig an eclectic mix from classical, celtic, pop, tribal, to alternative to rock, to new age.

So, thank you for the music!

I Need a Break from Law School

"I need a break!"

Studying law, doing freelance work while holding a regular 9-5 job can take its toll, so I decided to take a much needed rest or shall I say, a 'break' from law school this semester. One day has only enough time to do things without sacrificing hours intended for sleep and relaxation. It is not easy to concentrate and focus when you have so many masters.

Despite this, I am bent on graduating from law school, let's just say that I am in no hurry. I believe that it is the journey that matters. Right now, I am enjoying myself so much with everything that goes on in my work and family that law school will need to take a back seat. I am not saying that I don't enjoy law school but I want to take things slow. As it often happens before, I also know I'll miss law school after a semester's leave and yearn to go back once I got all my priorities and schedule are straightened out.

Some raised their eyebrows knowing I only have a semester's worth of subject left, but this is my life and my decision and I don't feel the need to explain myself. I feel that this is the best thing for me to do right now. I know myself more than anyone else, so there!

I hope to be back in school soon (or maybe next semester perhaps, when I get my dream car lols,
who knows?) but I'll continue to do my best to update this blog as much as I can because I believe that there are still readers and fellow law students who might stumble upon this Lawsandfound blog from time to time for some needed information or digest or anything.

Of Law Students and Coffee Shops

Bars? Not really. Most law students love hangin' out in coffee shops I think.

Coffee Shop Invasion

It's hard enough studying law in a place not conducive to mind-numbing memorization. Your school's law library is of course a perfect choice but not all of them are on 24/7. So which is the next best place to read and study? Coffee shops!

One of them coffee shops
Law students are a special group of folks who love chugging coffee and water on normal days and I definitely think the coffee shops are missing out on a great marketing opportunity (more on this soon). They should have a special promo or card  or rewards plus for law students, haha. Just saying. Undeniably, coffee shops are great hang outs for law students like me not only for the coffee and the great nibbles but for the opportunity to read quietly.

Worst Times to Read in a Coffee Shop

Pre-exams week are awful not only in finding prime but quiet nook but also in getting a safe parking slot. It's not just fellow fab law students fighting over a seat and a table cause these places are also filled with med students.

Weekends especially Friday nights are also not conducive when the working and nightlife crowd descends in these coffee shops. Some of them have already called it a night after a few rounds of drinks in some bar and they can get, well rowdy, you get the picture.

Perfect Timing

Of course, the best time to actually spend some nice time is during early mornings on weekdays. The only drawback is you gotta fight it off with the rush hour crowd to get to these places, which is kind of a bummer and such a time waste unless you live right next to one.

Some Coffee Shop Etiquette Please!

And yeah, some can get pretty over the top during exams week. I often see some bringing their study lamps, some small pillows, I mean really! Actually, there are times I feel like I'm in the middle of the private study room, which should not be the case. After all these are still commercial establishments trying to earn a profit. There's nothing wrong with doing reading but don't overdo it, y'all. These are just some habits that I think should be better left done in the privacy of your own room.

Happy reading and raise up those warm mugs of your choice, cheers to studying law!
